AI-Irakli Beridze Introducing the Centre in All Six UN Languages

The Hague, Netherlands -

In an AI-generated video published in July 2024, the Head of UNICRI's Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics, Irakli Beridze, introduces the Centre’s work seamlessly in all six official UN languages.

While Mr. Beridze does not actually speak all these languages, the video demonstrates the use of AI tools in the Centre’s own work to communicate its message more effectively to the world and boost UN Member States' understanding of the risks and benefits of this powerful technology.

In English, French, Arabic, Spanish, Russian and Chinese, Mr. Beridze’s AI avatar says:

"In 2017, our Artificial Intelligence Centre was established in The Hague, Netherlands, to advance understanding of the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence, robotics and related technologies in the areas of crime prevention, criminal justice, rule of law and human rights.

To that end, our projects fall into one of two streams. The first is policy-building, where projects focus on the research of cutting-edge technology and its responsible use.

The second stream consists of practical applications and capacity-building, where projects facilitate supporting technology for specific use cases through, for example, in-person or online trainings.

To date, our projects have reached a global audience with members in over half the world’s countries.

We have found across the criminal justice spectrum that agencies stand to benefit from artificial intelligence regardless of technical expertise, provided the right tools and knowledge of how to use them responsibly."

This video exemplifies how such technology can be used for good, in this case boost communication across the world; but at the same time, it also raises questions about how the same technology can be misused for malicious purposes, such as spreading disinformation.
