Training of Trainers Course for Psychologists and Social Workers on the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Violent Extremist Offenders
From 22 to 24 October 2018, UNICRI and the Jordanian Corrections and Rehabilitation Centres Department (CRCD) are holding a Training of Trainers Course for Psychologists and Social Workers on the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Violent Extremist Offenders (VEOs) in prison settings.
This capstone course in Amman, organized with the support of Compagnia di San Paolo, aims to provide in-depth knowledge and enhance the capacity of psychologists and social workers to provide treatment to VEO inmates and instruct colleagues on a series of training modules to counter violent extremism and employ effective rehabilitation and reintegration strategies.
The activity follows a series of basic and advanced training courses, which were carried out with select stakeholders in Jordan during 2016 and 2017, and which focused on interviewing techniques for working with VEOs; risk assessment and classification, evaluation of program results, good practices at the national and international level and other related topics.
These capacity building activities are a part of a longstanding cooperation with the Jordanian Authorities to address violent extremism in prison settings. This cooperation has extended to the international sphere, including Jordanian participation in the UNICRI Conference entitled, Bridging the Gaps between Prison and Community based Rehabilitation and Reintegration Programs for Violent Extremist Offenders, held in Turin, Italy, from 14-16 February 2018. Additionally, the Permanent Mission of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the UN co-sponsored a Side Event with UNICRI and other partners on the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Violent Extremist Offenders, within the framework the High-level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies, convened by the UN Secretary-General in New York on 28-29 June 2018.
As part of the Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF) of the United Nations, UNICRI has been implementing a major international initiative since 2012, to support Member States in designing and establishing rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for VEOs and foreign terrorist fighters.
The initiative is based on the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) Rome Memorandum, which specifically addresses the rehabilitation needs of incarcerated violent extremists. Further information on the initiative can be found here.
