Turin, Italy, July 2020. UNICRI is implementing a research project aimed at enhancing the role of families in drug use prevention and recovery among adolescents and children. This initiative, carried out with the support of the Department for Antidrug Policies of the Government of Italy, includes research activities in three selected countries: Italy, Lebanon and Tunisia.
Turin, 28 May 2020. Socio-economic conditions, as well as the practical and psychological challenges that families face during difficult times can represent risk factors and fertile ground for the development of drug-related problems among young people. It is therefore critical in such circumstances to pay the proper attention to families, in particular to their specific needs, in order to understand how they can be better supported in reducing the risk factors associated to drug use and to avoid the exacerbation of already complex situations.
The year 2020 marks two important landmarks in gender equality achievement: the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action and the 20th year of implementing Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic caused cancellation and postponing of many important international meetings, including a shortened version of the 64th session of the Commission on the status of women, but it is also risking to heavily jeopardize the progress made over the last years.

Families can play a crucial role in facilitating the onset of drug use as well as in preventing it and in supporting the recovery process. The collaboration between families and professionals in this field is therefore one of the most effective elements.
Considering the scale and the evolution of drug consumption modalities, there is a need to identify adequate tools for families to prevent and recognize at-risk behaviors and possibly intervene if such behaviors result in drug use or in the progression towards substance use disorders.
Countering gender-based violence, addressing vulnerability factors and empowering women have always been at the forefront of UNICRI work. Over the last 50 years the Institute has centered its crime prevention, justice and human rights protection programmes on gender issues and reducing the factors of vulnerability of women and girls.
UNICRI 2019-2022 Strategic Programme Framework, contains the tools and approaches used by UNICRI to carry out its activities, as well as the Institute six strategic priorities.
