UNICRI briefed different Director Generals of the European Commission on the infiltration of organized crime in food business and bioterrorism through the use of biotechnology. Organized by the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), the meeting aimed at discussing possible forms of cooperation in the area of Big Data analytics and visualization, in cooperation also with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). On that occasion, a “knowledge hour” was also organized by the DG to sensitize the staff to issues related to food fraud.

On 5-6 September 2018, UNICRI, in cooperation with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), held the 2nd INB Network Partners Meeting at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva. The partners participating in the meeting represented universities and research institutes from 9 countries and several international organizations, including the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Advances in biology and biotechnology are occurring at an unprecedented rate, opening doors for seeking improvements in important fields such as health, food and environment. However, rapidly advancing capabilities, decreasing costs and widely expanding access to and participation in modern biology and biotechnology simultaneously increase the likelihood of safety and security risks that could endanger public health and the environment. UNICRI has been at the forefront in understanding these potential security risks.
