Turin, UN Day

Message from the Director of UNICRI, Antonia Marie De Meo

"Today we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations from Turin, where we are generously hosted by Italy.

Thanks to the Municipality, the historical bridges of Turin are lit up in blue, the colour of the United Nations flag. Around the world, we see this blue light sending a message of peace, hope, and solidarity.

20 years ago, UNICRI joined the International Training Centre of the ILO on the UN Campus in Turin, situated along the banks of the Po River. People from all around the world come to Turin to learn and exchange experiences and to strengthen their know-how to face challenges in their home countries.

UNICRI is a United Nations research and training institute for criminal justice and crime prevention. We apply action-oriented research to guide our specialized capacity building programs in emerging criminal fields such as environmental crimes, terrorism, the nexus with organized crime, and artificial intelligence in law enforcement. We also deliver one of the top LL.M. programs in Transnational Crime and Justice.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, UNICRI has met increasing training needs through adaptable online modalities. We are proud to contribute to efforts to mitigate the negative impacts of the pandemic, enhance resilience, and promote peaceful, safe, and inclusive communities.

To commemorate the UN’s 75th Anniversary, world leaders adopted a Declaration promising a safer, more resilient world for future generations. They recognized that “There is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and normative impact of the United Nations. No other global organization gives hope to so many people for a better world and can deliver the future we want.”

On behalf of UNICRI, “We are here to ensure the future we want and the United Nations we need.” Thank you for joining us to advance peace and security, development, and human rights for all.
